Kids summary (simpler)Tap to expand
Tyranitar is the Armor Pokémon — Rock and Dark from Larvitar → Pupitar → Tyranitar. In Pokémon GO it is a top Rock/Dark attacker and can Mega Evolve into Mega Tyranitar. Rock/Dark hits Fire, Flying, Ice, Bug, Ghost, and Psychic well; Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Grass, Water, Steel, and Ground punish it. Smack Down + Stone Edge / Crunch is the classic kit.
Say it: tie-RAN-ih-tar
Tyranitar (#248) is a Rock / Dark Pokémon in Pokémon GO — the final form of Larvitar. Trainers use it as a Rock/Dark raid attacker (especially Mega Tyranitar for Rock lobby boost) with Bite / Iron Tail / Dragon Breath + Stone Edge / Crunch / Fire Blast / Brutal Swing. Against Tyranitar, lead with Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Grass, Water, Steel, or Ground. Stats, type chart, moves, and counter picks below use our Game Master snapshot.

Where in GO: Wild spawns, eggs, Field Research, and seasonal events
Invest tip: Smack Down + Stone Edge / Crunch is the usual Rock/Dark kit when Smack Down is available (legacy fast — confirm live). Shadow Tyranitar is elite Rock DPS — remove Frustration before investing; keep a non-Shadow for Mega. Farm Mega Energy from Mega Tyranitar raids and events.
Type matchups
- Rock moves hit Fire, Ice, Flying, and Bug hard.
- Dark moves hit Psychic and Ghost hard.
When Tyranitar is your opponent, Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Bug, Steel, Fairy hits hard.
Full type matchup guide →Mega Evolution
Tyranitar can Mega Evolve into Mega Tyranitar (still Rock / Dark). Mega Evolution uses Candy plus Mega Tyranitar Energy, boosts Rock attackers in the raid lobby, and only one Mega or Primal can be active at a time. Shadow Tyranitar cannot Mega Evolve — purify first if you want the Mega.
