Shadow Pokémon — Complete Guide
When Shadows win, when to purify, and which Shadows are worth building.
Kid-friendly
Kid version: Shadows hit harder but take more damage. Keep the good ones for raids/PvP; purify only when the guide says it helps.
Metas and raid DPS change with updates. Verify live teams on Pokebattler and PvP ranks on PvPoke before spending Stardust or XL candy.
Shadow Pokémon — Complete Guide
Free forever in 3CL TCG. The full guide is never paywalled. Meta snapshots are dated — always verify live data on PvPoke / Pokebattler.
Section 5: Shadow Pokémon — Complete Guide
What Are Shadow Pokémon? - Obtained from Team GO Rocket battles — Grunts, Leaders (Arlo, Cliff, Sierra), and Giovanni - Have a +20% Attack boost and a −20% Defense penalty compared to purified or normal versions - Purifying removes the shadow bonus and costs Candy/Stardust — generally NOT recommended for meta attackers - Shadow Pokémon have higher DPS but lower TDO (Total Damage Output) — they hit harder but faint faster
Shadow vs. Normal: When to Choose Which
Scenario Use Shadow Use Normal / Purified Raid DPS Priority Yes — Shadow's +20% ATK wins No — unless shadow is unavailable Solo / Duo Raiding No — you need TDO and survivability Yes — bulk keeps you alive longer PvP Great / Ultra League Situational — Shadow can win more trades Normal often has better bulk for shield-heavy play PvP Master League Yes — Shadow Legendaries deal massive damage 15/15/15 normals are still excellent Budget Investments Only if naturally obtained Shadow Normal versions easier to obtain and power up Relobby Count Matters No — low TDO means more relobbies Yes — TDO-focused normals survive longer Top Shadow Pokémon Worth Building (S-Tier) - Shadow Mewtwo — Best Shadow PvP and Raid attacker overall - Shadow Groudon — Ground-type king with enormous Attack stat - Shadow Kyogre — Water-type queen; exceptional DPS - Shadow Mamoswine — Best Shadow Ice attacker - Shadow Metagross — Top Steel attacker; requires Meteor Mash via Elite TM - Shadow Rhyperior — Ground/Rock DPS machine - Shadow Dragonite — Excellent Dragon attacker at a lower candy cost than Shadow Legendaries - Shadow Rampardos — Glass cannon Rock attacker with best-in-class DPS - Shadow Chandelure — Ghost/Fire dual coverage specialist - Shadow Tyranitar — Dark/Rock DPS for applicable raids
- Shadow Excadrill — Ground/Steel coverage with fast moves - Shadow Conkeldurr — Elite Fighting attacker for Raid and PvP Purify or Keep Shadow? Rule of Thumb: Keep Shadow for raid attackers and PvP. Purifyonly if one of the following applies: - The Purified forme has an exclusive move relevant to your strategy (rare cases) - You intend to trade the Pokémon — Purified reduces trade Stardust costs significantly - The Pokémon is not competitively relevant in either raids or PvP
