What Mega Evolution is

Some fully evolved Pokémon can **Mega Evolve** into a temporary powered-up form for a limited time. In Pokémon GO this costs **Candy** plus **Mega Energy** for that species (and that form, when X and Y both exist).

Species pages that have Mega forms show a short blurb and links to each Mega page. This chapter is the full how-to.

What you need

1. The base Pokémon (example: Charizard). 2. Enough **Candy** for that species. 3. Enough **Mega Energy** for that Mega form. 4. A free Mega slot — **only one Mega or Primal** can be active at a time in your party / lobby rules.

First Mega Evolution for a species costs more Mega Energy; later ones are cheaper once that species is leveled in the Mega system (check the in-game Mega button for live costs).

X and Y forms (Charizard, Mewtwo, and friends)

Some Pokémon have **two** Mega forms:

• **Mega Charizard Y** — stays Fire / Flying; the usual **Fire raid** mega and Fire-type lobby booster.
• **Mega Charizard X** — becomes Fire / Dragon; different weaknesses and roles.

Each form has its **own Mega Energy**. Candy is shared for the species, but you cannot spend Y energy to become X.

Always open the individual Mega species page for typing, weaknesses, and counter lists.

What Megas do in raids

1. **Personal DPS** — Mega stats are higher; they often top type shortlists. 2. **Lobby boost** — a Mega (or Primal) can boost damage for allies using the same type. Lead with the Mega that matches the attackers your friends brought. 3. **One Mega rule** — coordinate so the lobby is not full of mismatched Megas.

How to earn Mega Energy

Common sources (rotate with events — verify in-game):

• Winning raids where that Mega (or related species) is featured
• Walking the species as your buddy after you have Mega Evolved it before
• Special research, timed research, and event bonuses

Energy amounts change with events. Treat community calendars as hints, not guarantees.

Mega vs Shadow vs base

Do not Mega Evolve just to look cool before a PvP match unless you know the Mega is legal / useful in that cup — most GBL cups ban or ignore Mega forms. Megas shine in **raids**.

Family tip

Kids can help walk buddies for Mega Energy after the first Mega Evolution. Parents should confirm which form (X vs Y) the family is farming energy for before spending Remote Raid Passes.
