Kids summary (simpler)Tap to expand

Gyarados is the Atrocious Pokémon — Water and Flying from Magikarp. In Pokémon GO it is a Water/Flying attacker and can Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados (Water/Dark). Water helps against Fire, Ground, and Rock; Flying helps against Fighting, Bug, and Grass. Electric hits it for 4×. Aqua Tail from Magikarp Community Day (or an Elite TM) is a key charged move. Evolve Magikarp or catch Gyarados from raids and events.

Type matchups

  • Water moves hit Fire, Ground, and Rock hard.
  • Flying moves hit Grass, Fighting, and Bug hard.

When Gyarados is your opponent, Electric, Rock hits hard.

Mega Evolution

Gyarados can Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados (Water / Dark). Mega Evolution uses Candy plus Mega Gyarados Energy, boosts Water or Dark attackers in the raid lobby, and only one Mega or Primal can be active at a time. Shadow Gyarados cannot Mega Evolve — purify first if you want the Mega. Mega form typing differs from base (loses Flying, gains Dark).
